How to wire up a ceiling fan switch?
The first step of wiring up your ceiling fan switch is to turn off the power. For this job switch off the breaker. It is better to use the voltage tester to make sure that the power is off. If it indicates voltage then go back to the breaker box to switch off the appropriate breaker. After switching off the breaker, please be sure that the power is off before touching the wires.
Secondly, you will have to strip the wires coming into your switch box. Use the razor blade to strip the insulation about one inch at the end of each wire. You can also use the wire stripper to take the insulation off. After stripping the black wires from both the power source cable and from the ceiling fan cable, give them a little curl at the end. It will help to mount them on mounting screws.
Thirdly, turn your switch and you will see two holes at the backside of your switch. These are the holes where you can put your wires and fasten them by tightening the screws. Now the black wire goes to the black. Please make sure that the hot black wire to your switch should be on the top of the hole. While the black wire running up to your ceiling fan must be placed on bottom hole of the switch.
Now it’s time to put the one black wire at the top and the other one at the bottom hole of the switch, screw, and tighten them up. You don’t need to connect your neutrals to your switch. Take the two neutrals which are usually white, one from the power source cable and the other from the ceiling fan cable wire knot them together by using a wire nut.
The next thing that you will have to do is to take the two grounds, one from each cable. These ground wires are usually are bare copper wires. Wrap these ground together around each other. Take a ground wire nut having a hole at the top that allows these wires to pass through. Insert the wires into the ground wire nut and tighten these wires. Give the ground wires a little curve at the end that are passed through a wire nut. Ground these wires by tighten it up.
Secure your electrical wire connections by wrapping wire nuts and neutral wires with electrical tape. Tuck the wires into the switch box. Mount the switch to the box and tighten it up with the help of battery powered drill. You can also use a screwdriver if you don’t have a drill. Install the face plate of the switch box.
